October 8, 2026
The 2026 IRONMAN World Championship runs on Saturday, October 10, and this year the top men and women race on the same day in Kona again. The pro men start from Kailua Pier at 6:20 a.m. and the pro women at 6:30 a.m. After the split years, the one-day format sounds like a smaller footprint in town. On the calendar, it is.
On the road, it works differently. The official 2026 traffic notices close Kaʻahumanu Place, Kailua Pier and Aliʻi Drive from Kaʻahumanu Place to Likana Lane from 12:00 a.m. Thursday, October 8, until 3:00 p.m. Sunday, October 11. That is about 87 hours for a race that starts Saturday at dawn. The rest of the closures follow a simple pattern: the closer a road sits to the pier, the longer it stays closed.
The table below comes from IRONMAN's two 2026 "Notice to Motorists" maps, one for Kailua-Kona town and one for the drive from Kona to Hāwī. Hours are rounded. The pier closure starts Thursday, October 8, and every other closure in the table starts Saturday, October 10.
| Road segment | Closure window | Roughly how long |
|---|---|---|
| Kailua Pier, Kaʻahumanu Pl., Aliʻi Dr. from Kaʻahumanu Pl. to Likana Ln. | Thu 12:00 a.m. to Sun 3:00 p.m. | 87 hours |
| Palani Rd. between Kuakini Hwy. and Aliʻi Dr. | 3:30 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. Sunday | 22.5 hours |
| Aliʻi Dr. between Likana Ln. and Hualālai Rd. | 3:30 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. Sunday | 22 hours |
| Hualālai Rd. between Aliʻi Dr. and Kuakini Hwy. | 6:30 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. Sunday | 18.5 hours |
| Queen Kaʻahumanu Hwy., Palani Rd. to Kaiminani Dr., southbound only | 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. Sunday | 19 hours |
| Aliʻi Dr., Hualālai Rd. to Walua Rd. | 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. Sunday | 16 hours |
| Aliʻi Dr., Walua Rd. to Laʻaloa Ave. | 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. | 12 hours |
| Queen Kaʻahumanu Hwy., Kawaihae Rd. junction to Kaiminani | 7:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. | 11.5 hours |
| Akoni Pule Hwy., Route 19 junction to Hāwī | 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. | 8.5 hours |
Akoni Pule Highway reopens by late afternoon. The makai end of Palani Road stays closed until 2:00 a.m. Sunday, and upper Aliʻi Drive and the pier stay closed well into Sunday afternoon. So if you're planning around the race, the useful question is how close your errand sits to the pier and which day you need to do it.
Race week starts on Tuesday, two days before the pier closes. IRONMAN's event schedule, last updated September 15, 2026, puts most of race week's public events around Aliʻi Drive and Hale Hālāwai. Here's how the week lines up with the closures:
Every day the Village is open, it also hosts the Epic Wāhine Mākeke, a marketplace of local vendors. If you want to see the local makers without race-day crowds, Tuesday's noon-to-7:00 p.m. window is the longest.
In 2024, Hawaiʻi News Now quoted the Kona-Kohala Chamber president citing studies that put the event's sales impact at up to $50 million and linked about 441 jobs statewide to it. The owner of Kona Coffee and Tea Company told the outlet that sales rose at least 30 percent when athletes arrived. Those figures describe 2024, not the 2026 one-day format.
Kuakini Highway is the road to watch on race morning. Between Makala Boulevard and Palani Road it closes completely from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. For the same 12 hours, Makala Boulevard runs with limited lanes and has no access to Kuakini, and Loloku Street has no through access to Kuakini between Luhia Street and the highway.
South of Palani, Kuakini stays partly open with these rules:
Palani is split in two. Between Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway and Kuakini, the westbound lane closes at 6:00 a.m. and the eastbound lane at 6:30 a.m., both until 1:00 a.m. Sunday. Below Kuakini, Palani is closed outright from 3:30 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. Hualālai Road between Aliʻi and Kuakini closes from 6:30 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. If you live makai of Kuakini between Palani and Hualālai, your car is effectively boxed in from before sunrise until after midnight. Below Hualālai, Aliʻi Drive doesn't close until 9:00 a.m. The stretch from Walua Road to Laʻaloa Avenue reopens at 9:00 p.m., four hours before the stretch closer to town.
The official 2026 spectator map marks Palani Road and the Hot Corner and traces the run course along Aliʻi Drive and out toward the Natural Energy Lab of Hawaiʻi Authority (NELHA). It doesn't mark the Energy Lab as a viewing area. The highway access map does show NELHA with northbound-only access on race day.
North of town, the closures are shorter and come with posted detours. On Queen Kaʻahumanu Highway between Palani and Kaiminani, the northbound lanes stay open and the southbound lanes close from 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. The notice sends traffic between Palani and Hina Lani Street to Ane Keohokalole Highway. From Kaiminani north to the Kawaihae Road junction, the highway closes from 7:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and northbound lanes reopen in stages as safety allows.
For the airport, the notice routes traffic between the Kohala Coast hotels, the airport and Kona along Waikoloa Road, Mamalahoa Highway 190, Kaiminani Drive through Palisades, and Ane Keohokalole Highway, "race traffic permitting." If you're picking up guests Saturday afternoon, the trip runs inland, not along the coast.
The bike turnaround closes Akoni Pule Highway from the Route 19 and Kawaihae Road junction to Hāwī Town from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The posted alternate is Kohala Mountain Road, Highway 250, from Waimea. A dinner reservation in Hāwī that evening works fine. A midday drive up the coast doesn't.
One closure isn't on either map. Hawaiʻi County announced on September 29, 2026, that the West Hawaiʻi Sanitary Landfill and the Kealakehe Recycling and Transfer Station will be closed and unreachable on race day because of the road closures. The transfer station reopens at 6:00 a.m. Sunday, October 11, and the landfill at 7:00 a.m. Monday, October 12. Big Island Now repeated the notice on September 30 and advised residents and businesses to plan their waste runs around the closures. If you're clearing out the garage or have a yard-trimmings load, plan to make the trip before Saturday or wait until the transfer station reopens Sunday morning.
IRONMAN's schedule says it's subject to change. For anything the maps don't answer, IRONMAN's road closure hotline, 808-334-3400, is listed for September 30 through October 12. The pier and the top of Aliʻi Drive reopen at 3:00 p.m. Sunday.
Race week is one of the times Kona shows the world how it welcomes guests, and it goes smoother when you know which road opens when. If you're hosting family for race week, or you're buying or selling near Aliʻi Drive and want to time showings and inspections around the closures, the team at ʻĀina Luxury Realty is happy to help you plan the week.
